Hlau Hlau School Update October 5, 2009

The Hlau Hlau School, South Africa

APTA is happy to announce that we will be making a $5000.00 donation to the Allan Tyrcha Hlau Hlau Community Trust. The current project the trust has undertaken is to build a children's village for hundreds of the aids orphans that attend Hlau Hlau School. With the cooperation and assistance of the local chief, the trust has obtained the land and is now in the process of negotiating with the Reconstruction and Development Property (RDP) (a government housing agency) to build 5 houses for them to start. They are hoping to house 50 of the communities' most needy orphans in these first 5 houses. The funds that APTA is donating will be set aside to help furnish these houses. They are estimating the cost to furnish each house will be approximately $25,000.00 and the cost to operate each house for a year will be approximately $24,000.00 to $25,000.00 per house. The hope is that once the government officials see how this children's village operates that the government will help supplement the project. In the meantime the trust, the chief, and the school will need to get the village through the first year. APTA is proud to help sponsor this project. Many thanks to all the local chapters, corporate members, and individual members for their continued support and fundraising efforts on behalf of the Allan Tyrcha Hlau Hlau Community Trust. The Hlau Hlau School meets the criteria of the 'Responsible Giving Checklist' by James Currie which is found on the APTA website.

UPDATE 2009:

We recently received an update from Ethne Cameron with a report from the Hlau Hlau School in South Africa

"Alan Tychra Hlau Hlau Community Trust is growing and our orphanage for the school is fast becoming a reality. Thandi (Headmistress) and my self have spent lots of time with the local chief who has allocated a really nice piece of land adjacent to the school for us to build a "Safe area" for those little ones battling along on their own. We are working with the chief, department of education and the department of welfare. We have requested that our "safe house" be considered part of the school as a boarding hostel with a difference. The most incredible story of Hlau Hlau however is that Thandi Moropane, Headmistress, was voted as 2nd Top Primary School Head in the country by our president. It is the best school in the province and accomplished by the staff under a mentorship only. It has been the international assistance, not just financial, but, knowing that they have a whole world out there routing for them."

UPDATE 2008: Hlau Hlau

Letters from Hlau Hlau Students May 2008

As I mentioned in last issues article about Hlau-Hlau School the children have been corresponding with a local Elemenary school here and this quarter I thought Apta members may enjoy reading some of these letter directly from the students. Also these letters contain some great artwork from the students.

KENYA

Kenya Elephant Foundation: As a special thanks to Lynne Leakey and in support of the elephants APTA has made a $100 contribution to the Kenya Elephant Forum (KEF). They have a long, hard battle ahead of them and like APTA everything is done on a volunteer basis. They can always use support for their administration and I think all of us can relate to this. Pat Awori gives a tremendous amount of time and effort to spearhead this effort and the donation will go fully to support this cause.
