Phelophepa Health Care Train

Karell’s African Dream Vacations: Herewith is information on one of the charities we support.

In rural South Africa there is one doctor to every 4000 to 5000 patients. Primary health care is often unavailable to many while others who live below the poverty line simply cannot afford it.

THE PHELOPHEPA IS ON TRACK TO CHANGE THAT

In the past decade, the “Train of Hope”, has reached more than 1-million people with direct services, many more benefit from the outreach programs and training services provided.

The Phelophepa is mobile for 36 weeks of the year and each year more than 40 000 patients’ register for treatment at the Train’s various clinics.

15 Full-time staff and medical student volunteers (gaining valuable practical experience) form the team who offer basic health services (general health, dental psychological counseling and eye care) in remote rural areas where people have little or no access to medical care. Furthermore, health education such as AIDS awareness programmes is an important part of the initiative.

The Train’s monthly operating expenditure is around $200 000. In the coming financial year, the Transnet Foundation will provide 48% of the Train’s funding.

We are depending on our international benefactors to achieve the outstanding 52% of our budget. Your support therefore makes it possible for the Phelophepa Train to continue to help those in dire need of basic health services in remote rural South Africa.

Roche, one of the world’s leading research-oriented healthcare groups, who formed a long-standing partnership with Transnet in 1994, paying the costs of the health clinic, as well as the car the staff use to visit surrounding villages and schools, is a shining example of corporate support.

In December 2003 Roche announced a substantial funding boost for the ’miracle’ train that has been earmarked to extend services on the Train.

Apart from the maintenance of the Train and its communication infrastructure, new clinics for diabetes care and oncology will be added and the school health services programme extended, made possible by Roche’s significant contribution.

Type II diabetes is fast becoming a significant problem in rural South Africa – yet it can be prevented. Diet and obesity can predispose people to Type II diabetes, so we hope to add value to Phelophepa by educating patients on how to eat properly and recognize symptoms of the disease.

The oncology clinic will be enabled to screen for cancer, a disease, which often goes undetected amongst our patients. Although cancer cannot be treated on the Train, if diagnosed, referrals to local hospitals are done.
