APTA / SAA 2008 Indaba Educational Trip May 5 May 15
30 APTA members participated in the Second Annual APTA Indaba Educational co-ordinated by South African Airways and the APTA Executive Board, with many accommodations and special events and sponsored by our Corporate colleagues. This cooperation made the Educational a great success. Our accommodations were hosted by the Franschhoek Hotel and Spa in Franschhoek, Mandela Rhodes Place in Cape Town, Protea Umhlanga Rocks (just outside Durban) and in Kruger Concession areas at Lukimbi and Shishangeni Lodges. Our ground transportation was provided by Springbok Atlas in their very comfortable coaches, expertly driven by extremely talented drivers.
Enroute to Capetown, we were hosted by Fairview Estate Wines for a wine tasting. That evening, we were guests of the Vineyard Hotel for an expansive and delicious cocktail buffet accompanied by Cape wines. The following day included several site inspections, a visit to Cape Point, lunch at St James Hotel. We returned to Cape Town for dinner and an evening of African music (provided by a local student group) and a very special guest we got to meet up close - Thomas the Cheetah, all of which was hosted by David Wilson Poe and his crew at the Protea Hotel Victoria Junction
In Durban, we were welcomed with a dinner sponsored by Africapass and drinks sponsored by the Fazendin Portfolio and the ARP Group at our hotel. The following evening, South African Airways Vacations hosted a very elegant evening and gourmet dinner on the Rovos Rail. The train took a short trip as we enjoyed dinner and festivities and were able to experience what it would be like to make the journey on the famous steam train. At Indaba, our friends at CCAfrica hosted us for drinks and snacks at their out door stand and we got to network and socialize with other APTA Members, both Corporate and Chapter Members, who attended Indaba.
Our Corporate Members, hosts and sponsors spoiled us completely and BIG thank you to all who participated!
The primary goal of APTA this year was to get as many participants as possible who had: a) never been to Africa, b) never been to South Africa and c) never been to Indaba. About 50% met all three criteria and about 90% had never been to South Africa and about 95% had never been to Indaba. It is always a joy to share the wonders of discovery with those who are experiencing seeing things for the first time. This group of APTA members was a wonderful reflection of what we are all about, showed true passion for Africa and a real desire to learn about the destination and its' products; truly terrific Ambassadors for our organization.
A special thanks to SAA for assisting us with tickets and to: Katherine Jochen, SAA, and Beth Lincoln, APTA National for escorting the group, and Paul Swart and Virginia Dionisio, APTA National for organizing the program for the second year.
