Letter from the Executive Director

Dear APTA Members:
Kathryn Monaco, Executive Director of APTA
Kathryn Monaco

Where has 2011 gone?! A chaotic beginning with natural disasters and political uncertainty in parts of the World, as usual, things we could have not predicted. We must never forget there are so many things in this industry we cannot control or change, but what makes us who we are and why we are here is our ability to adapt, be flexible and turn a negative into positive. Just like our animal friends in Africa, it is survival and we continue to survive. Looking through our web site you will find the history of APTA as told by our organization's founders, which gives some insight as to just how much we have survived over the years.

Africa is hot now and the trip of a lifetime for most clients. As APTA Members we have the advantage with the knowledge, expertise and contacts to sell Africa better than anyone else in the industry, so let's use this to the best of our abilities and get out there to promote and sell our destination!

Your National Board has been busy, as have been many of our Chapters! Mark your calendars and plan to attend our National Forum in Chicago September 16th – 18th. Details and registration forms available at www.apta.biz .You may have noticed our ongoing promotion with Travel Research On Line (TRO). This gives us huge exposure and has gained new agent members. We again partnered with the New York Times Travel Show and have another successful "Focus on Africa" behind us. Our own Discover Africa Shows were well received and well attended this year and we will be attending the Adventure Travel Trade Association annual Summit in October and hope to have some other exciting new initiatives to announce at the Forum.

We will say good-bye to David Glanz and Kate Daniel on the National Board and welcome Jane Behrend, Sandy Henneman and Sunit Sanghrajka. I don't like good byes and this one particularly hard, but we have many new things to look forward to in the future with our new National Board Members. David and Kate you will be missed more than you know.

Look for more information on the National Forum and other events in this issue or on the site.

I look forward to seeing you in Chicago in September!

Best regards,
Kathryn
